Iraq and Iran and the State of Palestine, with inside help from the Israeli Arabs. It appears that the Arabs themselves could scarcely believe that the State of Israel, the bane of their existence, suddenly crumbled in the face of the increasing pressure on all its fronts. When the IDF began to retreat from the steamrolling conquest of the Arab forces, the Israeli decision-makers began to reveal their weakness. Masses stormed the entrances of the airports in complete hysteria. The first contact of the Arab countries with the citizens of Israel ended in a ruthless massacre of hundreds of Israeli citizens. In the days thereafter, the sphere of the massacre widened, and thousands of Israelis were shot, beaten to death, tied behind jeeps and armored personnel carriers and then dragged along. Sometimes they were even tied to tanks in order to serve as human shields for the aggressors. The ring of external deterioration suddenly gave birth to a new ring of internal deterioration, within which Palestinian terrorists infiltrated Israeli cities, spewing terror and fear in the midst of the war. The male population, almost all of whom were engaged in creating new lines of defense for the State of Israel, did not have the time, under the pressure of the events, to deal with the terrorist cells who attacked shopping centers, looted, raped and murdered. While the Israeli police was busy in hot pursuit after them, the Israeli Arabs began to riot and block main traffic arteries in the North, accelerating the collapse of the State of Israel even more. At Fureidis Junction, where the city of Zichron Ya'akov overlooks the largest Arab city in Israel, Um el Fahem, an IDF supply convoy was attacked by Molotov cocktails and R.P.G. missile launchers, and the road was blocked for an entire day, a day which was critical for bringing reinforcements to the IDF forces in the Jordan Valley and Golan Heights. The Wadi Ara (Ara Valley) highway, one of the main access roads to Northern Israel, which snaked through the Arab-populated Ara Valley, was blocked to traffic for the second consecutive week. This time, Israeli Arabs waited from the outset with live ammunition, not with rocks and slingshots, consequently slaughtering tens of Israeli citizens who tried to use the road. The police were also met with a barrage of fire and Molotov cocktails and a real war developed along the Arab settlements in Wadi Ara. Heavier weapons such as grenade launchers and LAW missiles were transported at night from the Palestinian Autonomy to Um el Fahem. The war, which began with rifle shots, quickly developed into an all-out war in a populated area, the quashing of which required trained army forces which were, of course, busy up to their eyeballs on the various fronts. Therefore, the only main traffic artery which led to the North was through Fureidis, in the direction of Yoqneam. The Israeli Police still tried to break through the Wadi Ara axis, but were defeated due to the massive use of machine guns and LAW missiles, which were aimed at the police convoys from the hills overlooking Wadi Ara. At this stage, the Israeli Police ceased all attempts to seize the Wadi Ara highway and since they were all busy trying to halt the Arab armies, there was no available military force to regain control of the field. With the control of the Wadi Ara highway, the Palestinian Army forces penetrated the area and openly assisted the Israeli Arabs to set up road blocks, de facto occupying the area and turning it into Palestinian. PLO flags openly flew above each house along the road, and on the posts at the Wadi Ara junctions. The Israeli Police constructed improvised roadblocks near the Barkai Kibbutz in order to thwart any possibility of a military force breaking through in the direction of Hadera, or southwards in the direction of Netanya and the Arab settlements. The Ben Gurion International Airport, Israel's only major international airport, was subject to artillery barrages, when the last airplane took off. Earlier, a civilian Boeing airplane belonging to the national airline company, El Al, was hit during take-off and crashed with all 250 passengers in a field near the Hiria land deposit. There were no survivors and the airplane wreckage was distributed all over Hiria, up to the outskirts of the southern Tel-Aviv neighborhood of Hatikva. On the last plane there were politicians, businessmen, celebrities and even many rich Orthodox Jews. That's all folks |
